Nipple Reduction
in Rogers, Bentonville, Fayetteville, Springdale Arkansas
Most are familiar with the more popular cosmetic procedures, such as breast augmentation or rhinoplasty. However, nipple reduction is one surgery that is just as beneficial although lesser known. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nipples, a nipple reduction may be a great option for making a permanent improvement to their look, size and symmetry. Dr. Robert Taylor and Dr. Kasia Kania are experienced plastic surgeons who can develop a customized treatment plan to meet your unique needs and goals.
What is a Nipple Reduction?
A nipple reduction is a surgical procedure designed to alter the size, shape and other characteristics of the nipple in order to improve the symmetry and overall appearance of the nipples. Oftentimes an areola reduction is performed in conjunction with a nipple reduction in order to further improve the area aesthetically.
Why Would Someone Need a Nipple Reduction?
Generally, a nipple reduction procedure is purely cosmetic. Most patients who undergo a nipple reduction do so because they are not content with the characteristics of their nipples. Here are some of the most common complaints which lead someone to pursue a nipple and/or areola reduction:
- Sagging nipples
- Stretched or damaged nipples after breastfeeding
- Areolae are too large in diameter
- Asymmetric nipples and/or areolae
- Nipples are too long
- Nipples are too big
- Nipples are too visible underneath clothing
Can I Get A Breast Procedure Performed During My Nipple Reduction?
Absolutely! Many patients have their nipple reduction performed as part of a larger surgery which may include breast augmentation, breast lift, or a breast reduction. When a nipple reduction is combined with one of these procedures, the result is often a dramatically transformed contour and overall appearance of the breasts, nipples and areolas.
Can a Man Get a Nipple Reduction?
Yes! If a man has concerns about the shape, size and/or symmetry of their nipples, a nipple reduction can be life-changing for them. In fact, because they often have their shirts off and do not have the barrier of a bra, overly large areolae or protruded nipples can be more problematic for men than women. Our doctor is highly experienced in the complexities of nipple reductions of men versus women and can help you achieve an appealing and natural look.
Will I have Scars After a Nipple Reduction?
As with any surgical procedure that requires an incision, some levels of scarring are unavoidable. However, in most cases, the scars heal very well and will blend into the surrounding tissue, making them virtually invisible. A breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift on the other hand could result in a more significant amount of visible scarring. Special ointments, creams and other treatments can help reduce the appearance of these scars and most patients agree that the improvement in their body is worth having a couple of scars underneath their clothing.
When is the Right Time to have a Nipple Reduction Performed?
When making the decision to undergo a nipple reduction, the timing depends on when a patient feels they are ready mentally and logistically. It is also important that patients are over 18 and have finished developing physically before pursuing the procedure. It is also strongly recommended that women be done having children and breastfeeding prior to a nipple reduction, breast lift, breast augmentation, or breast reduction. Our plastic surgeon can help determine if and when a nipple reduction may be appropriate for you.
