Many women across the U.S., as well as in the Fayetteville area, are under the assumption that breast implants hinder your ability to breastfeed. However, this is not always the case; many women can breastfeed after undergoing breast augmentation.
Factors Determining if You can Breastfeed
The biggest factor in whether a woman can breastfeed after implants is the location of the incisions. If the incision is made across the nipple, there is a larger chance that milk ducts will be cut, which can impede milk flow. If the implant is inserted another way, like through an inframammary incision, no damage will be done to the nerves, milk ducts, or nipples, and breastfeeding shouldn’t be an issue.
Another factor that determines whether or not you will be able to breastfeed is the location of the placement of the implants. Based on your anatomy, your surgeon will suggest whether the implants should be placed beneath of above the pectoral muscle. If implants are placed beneath the muscle, patients may have an easier time breastfeeding.
A simple way to tell if you will be able to breastfeed after undergoing breast augmentation is to evaluate the feeling in your nipples. If you are experiencing diminished or no feeling in the nipples, nerves were probably cut during surgery, and therefore lactation may be affected.
